The Great Riddle – What is the Son’s Glorified Name?
Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell? Proverbs 30:4
The Great Riddle: “What is his name (Father), and what is his son’s name (Messiah), if though canst tell?
There is not much controversy about the Father’s sacred name being Yahweh. But what is the Son’s name? We begin solving this riddle by looking at both Old and New Testament Scriptures which answer Who is the Rock?, Who is the Shepherd?, Who is the Creator?, Who is the Great I Am?, Who is the Stone of Stumbling?, Who will Judge the world?, Who is the Savior?, What name will the nations use during the 1,000-year reign?, and lastly, What name was John the Baptist sent to be a messenger?
Upon studying the Scriptures, the truth-seeker finds seven titles which are used interchangeably in both the Old and New Testaments for “Yahweh” and “Messiah”. These are (1) The Rock, (2) The Shepherd, (3) The Creator, (4) The Great I Am, (5) The Stone of Stumbling, (6) Judge of the world, and (7) the Savior. We will be able to conclude that Messiah’s (i.e. the Son’s) name is also “Yahweh” by looking at these references. In addition, we will demonstrate that the nations during the 1,000-year reign will call Messiah (i.e. the Son) Yahweh and John the Baptist was the messenger for Yahweh.
(1) Who is the Rock?
And he said, Yahweh is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; 2 Samuel 22:2
Because I will publish the name of Yahweh: ascribe ye greatness unto our Elohim. He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: an Elohim of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he. Deuteronomy 32:3-4
Yahweh is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my Elohim, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. Psalm 18:2 (also see Psalm 18:46, 28:1, 71:1-3 and 92:15).
Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; And did all eat the same spiritual meat; And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Messiah. 1 Corinthians 10:1-4
Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of YahwehShua Messiah of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom Yahweh raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Acts 4:10-11
Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine (i.e. Messiah), and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. Matthew 7:24-25
Clearly Yahweh is the Rock and that Rock was Messiah.
(2) Who is the Shepherd?
Yahweh is my shepherd; I shall not want. Psalm 23:1
Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; thou that dwellest between the cherubims, shine forth. Psalm 80:1
{A Psalm of praise.} Make a joyful noise unto Yahweh, all ye lands. Serve Yahweh with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that Yahweh he is Elohim: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Psalm 100:1-3
Behold, the Sovereign Elohim will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. Isaiah 40:10-11
For thus saith Sovereign Elohim; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out. As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. Ezekiel 34:11-12
Then said Yah’shua unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. John 10:7-11
For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. 1 Peter 2:25
Now the Elohim of peace, that brought again from the dead our Sovereign YahwehShua, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Hebrew 13:20
Clearly Yahweh is the Shepherd and Messiah is the Great Shepherd of the sheep.
(3) Who is the Creator?
Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting Elohim, Yahweh, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. Isaiah 40:28
Thus saith Yahweh, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am Yahweh that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself; Isaiah 44:24
For thus saith Yahweh that created the heavens; Elohim himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am Yahweh; and there is none else. Isaiah 45:18
That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. John 1:9-10
And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in Elohim, who created all things by YahwehShua Messiah: Ephesians 3:9
Who is the image of the invisible Yahweh, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: Colossians 1:15-16
Yahweh, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Hebrews 1:1
Clearly Yahweh makes all things and all things were created by Messiah.
Before we move on, it is interesting to note that the prophet Isaiah tells us the name of our maker.
Isaiah 54:5 For thy Maker is thine husband; Yahweh of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The Elohim of the whole earth shall he be called.
(4) Who is the Great I am?
And Elohim said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. And Elohim said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, Yahweh Elohim of your fathers, the Elohim of Abraham, the Elohim of Isaac, and the Elohim of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. Exodus 3:14-15
Ye are my witnesses, saith Yahweh, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no El formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am Yahweh; and beside me there is no saviour. Isaiah 43:10-11
And Yah’shua said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Mark 14:62
They answered him, Yah’shua of Nazareth. Yah’shua saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Yah’shua of Nazareth. Yah’shua answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: John 18:5-8
Clearly Yahweh is the great I AM and Messiah said, I AM.
(5) Who is the Stone of Stumbling?
Sanctify Yahweh of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. And he (i.e. Yahweh) shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Isaiah 8:13-14
Therefore thus saith the Sovereign Elohim, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. Isaiah 28:16
Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him (i.e. Messiah) shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. 1 Peter 2:6-8
Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Yahweh(Shua) Messiah of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom Yahweh raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Acts 4:10-11
As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him (i.e. Messiah) shall not be ashamed. Romans 9:33
Clearly Yahweh is the stone of stumbling and Messiah is a stumblingstone.
(6) Who will judge the world?
But Yahweh shall endure for ever: he hath prepared his throne for judgment. And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness. Psalm 9:7
Say among the heathen that Yahweh reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously. Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof. Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice Before Yahweh: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth. Psalm 96:10-13
Make a joyful noise unto Yahweh, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise. Sing unto Yahweh with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm. With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before Yahweh, the King. Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together Before Yahweh; for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity. Psalm 98:4-9
For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: John 5:21-22
And the times of this ignorance Yahweh winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. Acts 17:30-31
Clearly Yahweh shall judge the world in righteousness and the Father will judge no man, but has committed all judgment unto the Son.
(7) Who is the Savior?
Ye are my witnesses, saith Yahweh, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no El formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am Yahweh; and beside me there is no saviour. Isaiah 43:10-11 (also Isaiah 43:3, 49:26, and 60:16).
Yet I am Yahweh thy Elohim from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no elohim but me: for there is no saviour beside me. Hosea 13:4.
Joel 2:32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of Yahweh shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as Yahweh hath said, and in the remnant whom Yahweh shall call. (compare with Acts 2:21 and Romans 10:13).
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Acts 4:10-12
And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. 1 John 4:14
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Messiah the Sovereign. Luke 2:11
For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Sovereign YahwehShua Messiah: Philippians 3:20
Clearly Yahweh proclaimed besides me there is no savior and the Father sent the Son to be savior of the world.
What name will the nations use during Messiah’s 1,000 year reign?
All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee, O Yahweh; and shall glorify thy name. Psalm 86:9
Who shall not fear thee, O Yawheh, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest. Revelation 15:4
All the earth shall worship thee, and shall sing unto thee; they shall sing to thy name. Selah. Psalm 66:4
And Yahweh shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Yahweh, and his name one. Zechariah 14:9
For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of Yahweh, to serve him with one consent. Zephaniah 3:9
In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, YAHWEH OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. Jeremiah 23:6 (also Jeremiah 33:16).
And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of YahwehShua, and for the word of Yahweh, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Messiah a thousand years. Revelation 20:4
And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust. Romans 15:12
Clearly Yahweh will be King over the earth during the thousand years and believers will live and reign with Messiah for a thousand years.
What name was John the Baptist sent to be a messenger?
Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Sovereign, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith Yahweh of hosts. Malachi 3:1
And Yahweh spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice. And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone. Deuteronomy 4:12-13
Note that in Malachi it says that “my messenger”, referring to John the Baptist, shall prepare the way before me (i.e. Yahweh). And also note in Deuteronomy, the messenger of the covenant is Yahweh.
We also read in the evangels that the “messenger”, John the Baptist, was sent before Messiah!
And as they departed, Yah’shua began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? 8 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. 9 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. 10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. 11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. Mark 11:7-11 (Also see Luke 7:24-28 and Matthew 11:7-15)
Lastly, the below Scriptures clearly show that John the Baptist prepared a way for Yahweh, since these Scriptures from the evangels were direct quotes from the prophet Isaiah.
Matthew 3:3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of Yahweh, make his paths straight (Also see Mark 1:3 and Luke 3:4).
Isaiah 40:3 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of Yahweh, make straight in the desert a highway for our Elohim.
I am sure by now you know that answer to part two of the riddle…”and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?” The answer to the riddle is Yahweh!!! The Father’s name and the Son’s name is Yahweh. Although the Father and the Son have the same name, they are distinct beings and are not co-equal.
Hear, O Israel: Yahweh our Elohim is one Yahweh: (or can read Yahweh or Elohim is Yahweh united). Deuteronomy 6:4
Believers distinguish the Son’s name by adding the suffix Shua (i.e. savior). The Son is our Savior, YahwehShua. As a side note, Yahweh’s Word allows for the addition of a suffix. A suffix does not alter His name. Examples of suffixes used with Yahweh’s name include Yahweh El Shaddai (Yahweh Almighty), YahwehYireh (Yahweh the Provider), Yahweh-Ropheka (Yahweh who Heals), YahwehNissi (Yahweh my banner), YahwehMekaddishkem (Yahweh who Sanctifies), YahwehShalom (Yahweh who sends Peace), YahwehTsabaoth (Yahweh of Hosts), YahwehTsidkenu (Yahweh our Righteousness), YahehShammah (Yahweh is there), YahwehElyon (Yahweh Most High), and YahwehRoi (Yahweh my Shepherd).
It is clear that the Rock, the Shepherd, the Creator, the Great I AM, the Stone of Stumbling, the judge of the world, the Savior, the name of the ruler during the 1,000 year reign, and lastly the name John the Baptist was a messenger for is Yahweh(Shua). As a side note, those that are already saved during the 1,000 year reign will probably call him YahwehTsidkenu, which means our Righteousness (Jeremiah 23:6 and 33:16).
The only time Messiah did not use the great name of Yahweh was after he emptied himself of his glory and became a man. It is not the intention of this paper to prove Messiah’s name Yah’shua when he was a man on this earth. Messiah once again reclaimed the great name of Yahweh when he was resurrected from the dead and returned to his previous glory (Psalm 89:21, Philippians 2:9, Jeremiah 23:6 and 33:16).
How do we know that the Yahweh of the Old Testament was sometimes Messiah? Because we have Scriptures which indicate that no one other than Messiah has seen or heard the Father and we have many scriptures in the Old Testament of Moses and the Prophets hearing and seeing glimpses of Yahweh.
No man hath seen Yahweh at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. John 1:18
And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. John 5:37
Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of Yahweh, he hath seen the Father. John 6:46
So who was the Yahweh that was seen or heard in the Old Testament? There are 165 places in the Old Testament where “Dabar-Yahweh” is found. The Hebrew word “dabar” means “word” or “speaking”. Therefore “Dabar-Yahweh” means the “Word of Yahweh”. And if no one has ever heard the Father, the “Word of Yahweh” could also be interpreted as the “Spokesman of Yahweh”. Over and over in the Scriptures, we see the “Dabar-Yahweh” or “Yahweh” talking and sometimes being seen by Abraham, Moses, the children of Israel, Samuel, Solomon, and Elijah.
Genesis 15:1 After these things the Dabar-Yahweh came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.
Genesis 17:1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, Yahweh appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty Elohim; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
Exodus 6:10 And Yahweh spake unto Moses, saying,
Exodus 24:16 And the glory of Yahweh abode upon mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days: and the seventh day he called unto Moses out of the midst of the cloud. 17 And the sight of the glory of Yahweh was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel.
1 Samuel 15:10 Then came the Dabar-Yahweh unto Samuel, saying,
1 Kings 6:11 And the Dabar-Yahweh came to Solomon, saying,
1 Kings 21:17 And the Dabar Yahweh came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,
Are there any clues in the New Testament on who is the “Word of Yahweh”?
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with Yahweh, and the Word was Elohim.
John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Revelation 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. 13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of Yahweh.
It seems very clear that the Yahweh that spoke and was heard in the Old Testament was Messiah. 1 Corinthians nails this on the head.
1 Corinthians 10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat; 4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Messiah.
Exodus 14:24 And it came to pass, that in the morning watch Yahweh looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians,
Deuteronomy 32:3 Because I will publish the name of Yahweh: ascribe ye greatness unto our Elohim 4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a Elohim of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.
Psalm 95:1 O come, let us sing unto Yahweh: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
1 Corinthians 10:8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them (i.e. the Israelites who left Egypt) committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand (see Numbers 25:6-9). 9 Neither let us tempt Messiah, as some of them (i.e. the Israelites who left Egypt) also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents (see Numbers 16:41-49).
Are you having a difficult time believing that the Father and Son’s names are both Yahweh? Let’s take a different approach. Where you see “LORD God” in your Old Testament English Bibles, in Hebrew, it is Yahweh Elohim. Yahweh is a proper name and Elohim being a title, meaning Mighty Ones…plural. What about these Scriptures?
Then Yahweh rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from Yahweh out of heaven; Genesis 19:24
Read it slowly….Yahweh from Yahweh.
Thus saith Yahweh the King of Israel, and his redeemer Yahweh of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no Elohim. Isaiah 44:6
Read it slowly….Yahweh and Yahweh
Still having problems believing that the Yahweh that was heard and seen in the Old Testament was Messiah and that his name is Yahweh(Shua)? Think about this: There is only one name alone that is excellent, exalted, and above all names….the great name Yahweh!!!
O Yahweh our Sovereign, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. Psalm 8:1
O Yahweh our Sovereign, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! Psalm 8:9
Let them praise the name of Yahweh: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven. Psalm 148:13
Elohim, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. Hebrews 1:1-4
But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn (power) be exalted (raised). Psalm 89:24
Wherefore Yahweh also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: Philippians 2:9
Which he wrought in Messiah, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: Ephesians 1:20-21
After reading the above….what name will you be using for the Son?
I will praise thee, O Yahweh my Elohim, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore. Psalm 86:12
Give unto Yahweh the glory due unto his name; worship Yahweh in the beauty of holiness. Psalm 29:2
And let thy name be magnified for ever, saying, Yahweh of hosts is the Elohim over Israel: and let the house of thy servant David be established before thee. 2 Samuel 7:26
O magnify Yahweh with me, and let us exalt his name together. Psalm 34:3
I will praise the name of Elohim with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving. Psalm 69:30
HalleluYah!
