Wealth and Money

There is nothing inherently evil about owning the things we need and to have wealth.  There have been many righteous men who were wealthy, such as David, Solomon, Abraham, Joseph, and Lazarus, brother of Mary and Martha.  In fact, Yahweh tells us to enjoy the fruit of our labor.

Ecclesiastes 3:13 And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of Elohim.

1 Timothy 6:17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living Yahweh, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;

However it is a problem when we strive for wealth before Yahweh and His will.  We must always put Yahweh first by being obedient to His Word.  Messiah said that serving Yahweh and serving wealth are incompatible goals:

1 Timothy 6:9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.   10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.   11 But thou, O man of Yahweh, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, holiness, faith, love, patience, meekness.   12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

Matthew 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:   20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:   21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.   22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.   23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!  24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve Yahweh and mammon (i.e. wealth).

Luke 12:33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.   34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Proverbs 28:22 He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him.

Jeremiah 9:23 Thus saith Yahweh, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:   24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am Yahweh which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith Yahweh.

Obtaining wealth is okay if we are obeying Yahweh.  But we need to be extra careful how we are obtaining our wealth.  Why?  Because the pursuit of wealth can lead us to sin and turn us from Yahweh.

Mathew 16:25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.   26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

James 5:1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.   2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.

Matthew 13:22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

Matthew 19:23 Then said Yahshua unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.   24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of Yahweh.   25 When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?   26 But Yahshua beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with Yahweh all things are possible.

Most believers and non-believers alike enjoy material blessings.  But as believers, we need to stop and ask ourselves how we got our material blessings?  Yahweh’s children should know and understand the potential trap that may be set for us because Satan has the power to give wealth to those who follow him.

Matthew 4:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;   9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

Again, our focus needs to be on Yahweh and realize the reward that Yahweh has in-store for us is greater than the “gold” and “silver” of this earth.

Psalm 19:7 The law of Yahweh is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of Yahweh is sure, making wise the simple.   8 The statutes of Yahweh are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of Yahweh is pure, enlightening the eyes.  9 The fear of Yahweh is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of Yahweh are true and righteous altogether.  10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

Proverbs 8:10 Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.   11 For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

19 My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.

Psalm 119:72 The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.

Another area in which believers may struggle is the carnal desire to obtain wealth and to keep up with the “Joneses”.  The Scriptures tell us we need to be content with what Yahweh has given us.  Otherwise we are practicing covetousness, which is idolatry.

Hebrews 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

Proverbs 15:16 Better is little with the fear of Yahweh than great treasure and trouble therewith.

Matthew 6:31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?   32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.   33 But seek ye first the kingdom of Yahweh, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Philippians 4:11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.   12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.   13 I can do all things through Messiah which strengtheneth me.

Colossians 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

One of the risks of having material blessings is the tendency for believers to start to become prideful and think we don’t need an Elohim.  Yahweh’s children blessed with material goods must be careful not to let our relationship with the Almighty become lukewarm.

Revelation 3:16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.   17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

We also must understand the power to obtain wealth is from Yahweh and we must give Him the praise!

Deuteronomy 8:17 And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.   18 But thou shalt remember Yahweh thy Elohim: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

1 Chronicles 29:12 Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.

1 Samuel 2:7 Yahweh maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up.

Those of us who are blessed with wealth beyond our needs have a responsibility to share generously with the less fortunate. We should view our wealth as a gift from Yahweh, entrusted to us, to carry out His work on earth.   Ultimately everything we have is Yahweh’s.

Proverbs 3:9 Honour Yahweh with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:

Acts 20:35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Sovereign Yah’shua, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

1 John 3:16 Hereby perceive we the love of Yahweh, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.   17 But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of Yahweh in him?

1 Timothy 6:17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living Yahweh, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;   18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;   19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

The following are parables of rich men on which to meditate.  What should we do if Yahweh honored us with wealth?

Luke 12:16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:   17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?   18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.   19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.   20 But Yahweh said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?   21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward Elohim.

Luke 16:19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:   20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,   21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.   22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;   23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.   24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.   25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.   26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

Obviously the above two parables are examples of how Yahweh does not want us to live.  An excellent example of trusting Yahweh is shown by the giving of the poor widow and Moses forsaking his wealth and privilege to follow Yahweh.

Mark 12:41 And Yah’shua sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.   42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.   43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:   44 For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

Hebrews 11:24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;   25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of Yahweh, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;   26 Esteeming the reproach of Messiah greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.

Remember, Messiah will reward us for obeying His Word, including how we shared Yahweh’s blessings with the needy.  In fact, it is not optional for believers to give to the needy.  It is commanded by Yah’shua and those who do not will be punished.

Matthew 25:31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:   32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:   33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.   34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:   35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:   36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.   37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Sovereign, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?   38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?   39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?   40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.   41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:   42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:   43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.   44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Sovereign, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?   45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.    46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

2 Corinthians 9:6 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.   7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for Yahweh loveth a cheerful giver.

Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; Elohim is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.   8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.   9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.   10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

And at the end of the day, accumulation of money and wealth in our life time does not matter.  Our money and wealth is passing away and we cannot take it to where we are going.  What matters is Yahweh and His Kingdom to come.  His reward is so much greater than the wealth of the world and His promises are not passing away!

1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which Elohim hath prepared for them that love him.

Isaiah 64:4 For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O Elohim, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.

Habakkuk 1:5 Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you.

HalleluYah
